Rock Paper Shears opened in the summer of 2020 and moved to downtown Lubbock in July of 2021. Owner/Hairstylist and Lubbock local, Callie Combest, has been professionally styling hair for 14 years and has a passion for styling interior spaces as well.

When asked about her initial vision for her salon, Callie stated, “It’s hard enough to go

to work every day, if you don’t like where you’re going. I wanted to create a beautiful environment, but also come as you are, be who you are.”

Resident Hairstylist Alicia Wolf

Rock Paper Shears is a “sensory experience like no other.” Floating light-up clouds hang from the ceiling, ornate trinkets from around the world line the walls, art made with everything from cigar wrappers to colorful beads decorate every square inch of the space. This may sound overwhelming, but the space is so meticulously arranged so it all forms one cohesive entity. This is part of Callie’s talent.

They display several types of art from various, rotating local artists for purchase. Callie started hosting artists at the space by going to galleries and shows, taking notes on which art she resonated with, and then inviting the artists to come tour the space.

“I don’t really have to go out there to search much anymore, I think Rock Paper Shears has gotten out there enough to where if an artist needs a home, they can just stop by and show me what they’ve got, we’ll see if we can make it work.”

Last month’s artists included Kat Powell and Mary Hogan, whose dark, spiritual pieces provided a mystical atmosphere for the month of October.

With all the local art on display, this salon is also known for being a popular stop on the First Friday Art Trail. Their November Art Trail event is titled ‘Nude November’ and will feature larger-than-life nude artist James Johnson’s work, a live ‘near-nude’ sketch by artist Robert Garza, as well as tarot readings, art and jewelry vendors, and complimentary beverages. For December, they will have moved their furniture around to make room for a sculpture artist to give their work residence.

“To me, the whole thing is living, breathing art. The hair that transforms in here, us, the stylists who work here, and the art that comes and goes monthly. It’s been really fun to think of it in that manner.”

This local salon invites residents to enjoy a cozy, eclectic atmosphere, and good conversation. “We don’t need to talk about the world’s problems. Come here so we can take care of you, make you feel better on the inside and out. I can’t fix the world, but I can fix your hair and you can tell me how you feel.”
